The MYC Guide: London Weekend Explorer 13 - 15 May 2016
Posted in: LOCAL
This weekend is going to be different, ladies and gentlemen. Apart from the warm weather that's already starting to take over, we're also anticipating one thing: the Angry Birds Movie. And right after you watch this famed mobile app-turned-movie, why not head over to some of London's popular bars for a cocktail or two whilst discussing about the animated movie? And if you're up for something serious (and musical-inclined), Southbank Centre is just the right place for you. MYC finds all the cool list of activities you can do this weekend below:
Breakfast: Dishoom Bombay Cafe
Breakfast at Dishoom is certainly an unforgettable treat. Paying homage to the old Irani Cafes of Bombay, you're transported in a place where dishes are enchantingly delicius and affordable (think: fried eggs on chilli cheese toast and the famed Bombay omelette with chopped tomato, onion, coriander and green chilli). It's usually a long queue during peak hours but the wait is worth it. Usual orders include the Akuri which is a spicy scrambled eggs (an Irani cafe staple!) and the Sausage Naan Roll which is the award-winning Shropshire pork sausage. Delightfully addictive on your every visit!
Located inside the Covent Garden and just a very short walk from the Royal Opera House, Balthazar offers a tasty French brasserie-inspired menu from breakfast, lunch to dinner options. If you're coming in for brunch with your family, we highly recommend you order the Balthazar Chopped Salad with chicken, avocado, blue cheese, hard boiled eggs, sweetcorn and bacon for a healthy chow time. Their Hazelnut Waffles with warm berries, creme fraiche and maple syrup is also extremely delicious.
Dinner: Ceviche Soho
Showcasing a diverse flavour of Peru, Ceviche Soho has a rich variety of homegrown ingredients that'll make you want to come back for more. Ceviche Soho's exciting cuisine will make for a delightful dinner of choice. Our favourites include the Pachamanca Chicken dish and the Cordero Norteno which is a lamb cutlets in a panca chilli marinade, spicy potato puree and salsa Nortena; truly the classics.
The Angry Birds Movie
Who knew that a popular mobile app would actually be turned into a movie a few years later? Well, the Angry Birds Movie is finally here, and we can't help but reminisce the good 'ol days of playing it via our mobile phones! In case you're wondering, the story plot is set on an island of birds and where being angry is truly frowned upon. Red, who is voiced by Jason Sudeikis, on the other hand is almost always angry which made him go off to an anger management class during an anger-related incident. There, he meets the rest of the gang (similar to the video game), and the adventure begins. Watch the trailer below before you head to the cinemas this weekend:
Gin is the all too famous drink at Portobello Star. Make sure you're up for cocktails and conversation since people will want to talk and talk... and talk when they're drunk.
Location: Portobello Star, 171 Portobello Rd, London W11 2DY, United Kingdom
Mr Fogg's Residence
This place might be a little too Victorian for your taste, but trust that they serve the best spiffing cocktail there is! It has the perfect backdrop for a #selfie, but make sure you don't post photos beyond the drinking hours.
Location: Mr Fogg's Residence, 15 Bruton Ln, London W1J 6JD, United Kingdom
Don't confess your sins just yet! This church-inspired cocktail bar (hence, the name) features all-things Catholic iconography that you'll awkwardly mistake it for a church itself! The drinks are seriously sinful, though, so beware.
Location: Communion Bar, 29-33 Camberwell Church St, London SE5 8TR, United Kingdom
Stravinsky In Depth at the Southbank Centre
If you're up for a little cultural and musical visit this weekend, then head over to the Southbank Centre for an in-depth session which explores the music of Stravinsky. The event will focus on Igor Stravinsky, who was a Russian composer, pianist and conductor, and his obsession with ritual and myth. Musicians from the Royal College of Music will be joined by Professor Jonathan Cross as well as Jane Pritchard, the curator of dance at V&A.
Il Divo at The O2 Arena
Get read for II Divo's Amor & Pasion tour at the O2 Arena this weekend as Carlos, Urs, Seb and David returns to the UK for a performance of a lifetime. Apart from performing their biggest hits such as Amazing Grace, Mama and Time to Say Goodbye, they will also be singing songs off their new and highly anticipated album. Ticket prices available here.
