Film This Weekend: Eddie the Eagle
Posted in: FILM THIS WEEKEND
While viewers are still recovering from the Batman VS Superman aftermath, big releases seem to have eluded this weekend. However, two unconventional options we are considering this week are “Eddie the Eagle” and the intriguing documentary “Motley’s Law”.
It’s a biography that traces the story of Eddie Edwards, a rookie ski jumper who stood out in the 1988 Olympics. “Eddie the Eagle” promises to be the underdog’s story of triumph and it executes its endearing story with a comedic streak.
When underdog ski jumper Michael "Eddie" Edwards (Taron Egerton) is written off by the entire nation but still keeps dreaming of making it to the Olympics, he finds an unlikely confidante and coach in former ski jumper Bronson Peary (Hugh Jackman). Directed by Dexter Fletcher, the film tells an inspiring story in a feel good way and with some sporadic laughs. It reinforces the power of the underdog and holds an appeal for sports movie fans also.
The performances are believable- Taron Egerton does justice in bringing Eddie’s character to life on screen and even though we have seen better from Jackman, there’s no denying that the man is an effortless performer.
“Eddie the Eagle” might not qualify as groundbreaking as far as biographies are concerned, however, it does make for a refreshing and easy going watch for a weekend movie.
