Why MAC's Instagram Photo Sparked Double Standards and Racism
Posted in: FEATURE
Fashion week season is all about celebrating fashion, beauty, creativity and passion... but sparking controversy online is one story, too. Recently, MAC Cosmetics posted a photo via their social media account, and the online world exploded with double standards issue and of course, racism. See the controversial photo below:
The controversial lips in the photo is from 23-year-old Uganda model, Aamito Lagum, who also won the first ever series of Africa's Next Top Model. When she learned about the racist remarks about her naturally full lips, she took to Instagram to express her side, saying, "My lips giving you sleepless nights. On @maccosmetics IG. Thankyou @maccosmetics for this killer color and to that makeup artist .ama get me 3 of these."
She also added a new photo and started a whole new movement for everyone to show how they are proud of their full lips online.
Indeed, the double standards that society imposes is quite alarming where everyone repulses the thought of naturally full lips but celebrates a surgically enhanced version.
