Why High Heels Speak Confidence

A study in the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior suggests that men find women in high heels sexier.

The abstract for the experiment states, “In a series of studies, the length of a women’s shoe heels was examined. A woman confederate wearing black shoes with 0cm, 5cm, or 9cm heels asked men for help in various circumstances. In Study 1, she asked men to respond to a short survey on gender equality. In Study 2, the confederate asked men and women to participate in a survey on local food consumption habits. In Study 3, men and women in the street were observed while walking behind the female confederate who dropped a glove apparently unaware of her loss. It was found that men were more likely to help as heel length increased. However, heel length had no effect on how often women helped. It was also found that men spontaneously approached women more quickly when they wore high-heeled shoes (Study 4). A change in gait, foot-size judgment and misattribution of sexiness and sexual intent were used as possible explanations.”

TIME magazine concludes by saying: “All of this confirms that men tend to use physical attributes as a way to gauge women’s attractiveness and to find potential mates.” Ok, yes, but I am unconvinced that the information provided by the study leads us to that conclusion and only that conclusion.

This is an error of confusing correlation for causation.  It is not the high heels that attract men; it’s the confidence that the high heels give the woman wearing them.  Confidence is definitely sexy.  Men are attracted to the confidence of the woman wearing the high heels, not simply because she happens to be wearing high heels.
