3 Habits that Make Oprah Successful And How You Can Do It, Too!
Posted in: CAREER
Oprah. Everyone wants to meet her. Everyone wants to be like her. How did she, with an appearance unlike what we are used to seeing on TV, forsake poverty, rise above sexual assault to become one of the most successful and well-known women, people, in the world?
Author Warren Cassell has studied Oprah over a period of years. The result of this study formed the basis of his book: O’Habits: 40 Success Habits of Oprah Winfrey (and the One Bad Habit She Needs to Stop!). I have chosen three important ones that make Oprah the success that she is:
“You get a car! You get a car! You get a car!” This statement, made when Oprah gave away 276 cars to as many families, has been parodied the world over. However, it is no secret that Oprah Winfrey is well loved and successful because she has such a great heart. Most recently, she renovated friend and TV personality Iyanla Vanzant’s home with the help of Nate Burkas and invited a few of the girls from her Leadership Academy in South Africa to her home and cooked them a Thanksgiving dinner.
Oprah Trusts Her Instincts
Another reason why Oprah is successful is because she has learned to listen to and obey her inner voice and promptings. According to Oprah, instincts are: "…where true wisdom manifests itself."
“Learning to trust your instincts, using your intuitive sense of what's best for you, is paramount for any lasting success,” she says. “I've trusted the still, small voice of intuition my entire life. And the only time I've made mistakes is when I didn't listen... But the more we can tune in to our intuition, the better off we are. I believe it's how God speaks to us.
“For all the major moves in my life—to Baltimore, to Chicago, to own my show, and to end it—I've trusted my instincts. I take in all the information I can gather. I listen to proposals, ideas and advice. Then I go with my gut, what my heart feels most strongly.
“And I often tell friends: When you don't know what to do, do nothing. Get quiet so you can hear the still, small voice—your inner GPS guiding you to true North.” We can see that this trait has served her well.
Oprah is Authentic
Just recently, Barbara Walters asked Oprah what is the one thing she’d like to be satisfied with before she leaves this earth. Oprah’s response was: “I have to make peace with the whole weight thing.” Although Walters was taken aback by the simplicity of the answer, in truth, Oprah’s answer is why we love her. She is real. She cries with us and laughs with us. We don’t get the sense she is trying to be sensational and gimmicky. Instead, we feel her humanity. It’s Oprah’s trademark vulnerability and ability to connect with her viewers and guests that make her relevant, with a legacy that will continue to resonate until the end of time.
