Dining is always a sensuous and enjoyable experience. One of the things that make it enjoyable for us is food (don't we all?). Another factor that makes dining more enjoyable is the ambience and experience offered by the restaurant itself. Most of the time, restaurants almost always feel the same but sometimes, they can give you a totally unique experience – something that will stay with you for a long time.

One emotion that we don’t usually feel when dining out is fear or tension. MYC Writer Yan Martin shares 5 unique and weird restaurants from different parts of the world that were designed to disturb you and shake your core (but will still give you a palatable experience!):

Dining in the Dark (Whale Belly Dark Restaurant in Beijing)

In the Whale Belly Dark Restaurant, people dine in pitch-black darkness. As you enter the restaurant, you will be met by waiters in military-grade night vision goggles. As they guide you through the dark corridors, other features of the restaurant then heighten your sense of sound, smell, touch, and taste, thus giving you a unique experience. To maintain the “darkness” of the whole place, cellphones, lighters, and other luminous or shiny items are placed in security lockers. Eating in the dark helps guests enjoy their food as they get to fully taste the flavour of their food.

Prison Time (Devil Island Prison Restaurant in Beijing)

Also in Beijing will you get to experience a life of crime. The Devil Island restaurant shows people what prison life looks like. Aside from the restaurant being designed like a prison, you will also be led to your table in handcuffs. Around you are rusting prison bars with waiters dressed in black-and-white striped uniforms waiting for your orders. Creepy, huh?

Eating Suspended on Mid-Air (Dinner in the Sky in Belgium)

If you think eating can’t probably give you jitters, think again! This restaurant in Belgium straps its guests in dining chairs and dangles them 150 feet above the ground from a crane. Along them are a few wait staff, a table, and everything needed to enjoy a meal. Meals cooked in a small oven in the center of the table and are served to guests thereafter.

Feel like a Ninja (Ninja New York Restaurant in New York)

If it has been a dream for you to know what it feels like to be a ninja, then you should go and visit the Ninja Restaurant in New York City. A rather unusual restaurant, this place leads its guests through a “secret path” towards a subterranean hall where they sit in tables within a dungeon-like chamber. “Ninjas” move in the shadows and perform different tricks that will sure entertain the diners. These tricks can even be seen in the meals that the place serves, like sauces catching on fire.

Be a Patient in a Hospital (DS Music Restaurant in Taipei)

You can only be in a hospital when you are sick but not when you want to eat. This hospital-themed restaurant in Taipei makes eating and “getting sick” feel different. As you enter the restaurant, you will see the wait staff dressed in nurse uniforms. They will then lead you to your table by pushing you through a wheelchair. IV-like contraptions serve as your drinks and ‘nurses’ get to ask you trivia questions and reward you with shots coming from a syringe.

Dining and eating out doesn’t have to be boring. In fact, it gets interesting when you feel different types of emotions throughout the whole experience.
