If you get hungry while out and about in London there are few better decisions you could make than popping in to a pub to try some delicious food. The rise of the gastropub in the capital has given us some incredible places to for tasty, informal food in a relaxed setting.

The Harwood Arms, Fulham

This first entry is a regular in the highest spots in the lists of the UK's top gastropubs. In fact, the Harwood Arms was the country's first pub to get awarded a Michelin star. The place feels relaxed and pleasant while the quality of the food is excellent. The exciting menu here includes the likes of freshly shot wild game, poached duck egg and treacle cured smoked salmon.

Opera Tavern, Covent Garden

If you are in Covent Garden and want a treat then try opening the doors of the Opera Tavern using the pig's hoof shaped brass door handles. Inside, you will find a vibrant pub with a grill on the ground floor and a classy dining room upstairs. The menu is heavily influenced by Spanish tapas, with fish, meat and vegetable dishes all served. There is also a charcuterie, selection of cheeses, bar snacks and some fine looking desserts.

The Bull & Last, Highgate

Close to Hampstead Heath, this gastropub is located in a delightful 19th century coaching inn. The owners stated aim is for a traditional pub atmosphere with a warm welcome and excellent food. The downstairs bar is simple but the upstairs dining room is smarter and more impressive. As for the food, expect classic British dishes such as battered haddock with chips and English lamb rump, as well as more gourmet dishes such as confit rabbit leg with wild mushrooms.

The Lady Ottoline, Bloomsbury

This lovely pub in Bloomsbury offers an authentic setting for a causal yet excellent dining experience. The downstairs section is for eating the likes of homemade sausages and chicken liver parfaits. Upstairs is more refined, with some nice salads and a very tempting looking dessert menu including chocolate pot & hazelnut cookie and homemade ice cream.
