Movie Review – Mad Max: Fury Road
Posted in: Culture
It has been a long time since the last Mad Max movie was released way back in 1985. One of the most noticeable differences with the latest instalment is that Tom Hardy replaces Mel Gibson in the title role.
Original director George Miller is back in control and he gives us another action-packed Australian outback adventure full of exciting car chases and post-apocalyptic chaos. `
The basic story is that Max is a retired highway patrolman who is asked to help a group of women escape from one of the evil gangs controlling the area. With the action set up in that way it is clear that we are in for a tense and thrilling chase across the desert.
Mad Max: Fury road is full of energetic car chases but more surprising is the fact that ladies on the run are shown as such strong, resourceful characters. They are called the Five Wives and the leader is Furiosa, played brilliantly by Charlize Theron. She calls the shots in many ways and arguably outshines lead actor Hardy.
There isn't a lot of dialogue in the movie and subtlety isn't really its strong point either. Expect lots of explosions and nasty death scenes done in a really over the top sort of way. However, if you want a fun way to spend a couple of hours cheering on the heroes and you like to see strong female characters on the big screen than this is a movie you are unlikely to regret going to see.
In terms of critical response, the new Mad Max film has received generally very positive reviews. It just remains to be seen how the public across the UK and the rest of the world rate it once they have seen it.
