As you may have known by now, we're great fans of DIY drinks that are healthy, nutritious and energy-boosting. In fact, we raved about several healthy drinks that can get your mornings started such as chicory, cocoa and sage decoction. However, today we're going to share with you a new (yet old) DIY energy drink that's basically cheap but heavenly: SWITCHEL.

So what is switchel, you may ask? Well, this refreshing drink that originated from the Caribbean is a tart and pungent mixture of apple cider vinegar, ginger root and maple syrup that is diluted in water for an "electrolyte" boost. But apart from quenching thirst, this nature's healthy gatorade also has major health benefits such as ramping up anti-inflammatory power, stabilizing your blood sugar and absorbing vitamins and minerals easily. A popular drink amongst the farmers community for its energy boosting effect, it is also basically so easy and inexpensive to make. Plus, it has been proven for centuries that it does have healthier benefits compared to other artificial and commercial drinks we've gotten used to such as Gatorade which have been shown to contribute to several weight problems due to excessive sugar content, add up to excess belly fat and destroy tooth enamel.

So if you're up for a little DIY in your kitchen, below is the traditional method of making your own switchel drink -- enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 2 quarts filtered water
  • 1/2 cup raw apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 2 tsp organic ginger powder or 2.5 Tbl fresh grated ginger
  • 1 tsp organic turmeric powder (optional)
  • Pinch of cardamom (optional)

Method:

1) Place all of the ingredients in a bowl and mix them very well.

2) Sip and enjoy either alone or with ice.

3) Refrigerate using glass containers only.

So, there you have it! Switchel is easy, convenient and healthy.
