Jennifer Lawrence returns as Katniss Everdeen with this week’s release of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 along with Josh Hutcherson as PeetaMellark and Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne.
The highly awaited finale to the Hunger Games franchise is finally hitting the screens in UK amongst the obvious frenzy that has been surrounding the film ever since its predecessor Mockingjay Part 1’s grand success last year. And, yes it has already proved to be a befitting send off to the series.
Mockingjay Part 2 picks up where the last film left us, with our heroine Katniss having lost her voice and is now leading the rebellion against President Snow (Donald Sutherland) under the repeated attempt of control by Alma Coin (Julliane Moore) and Plutarch Heavensbee ( the late Philip Seymour Hoffman).
The Hunger Games franchise has gathered a massive fandom over the last few years and as the finale the current offering definitely has a lot of expectations from fans and critics pinned on it. Also, the triangle between Katniss, Peeta and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) has always been a point of major interest and anticipations are high as to what developments the new film has on that front.
The other movie to look forward to this week is The Dressmaker and it’s a double strike at the box office for Liam Hemsworth as he stars opposite Kate Winslet in this offbeat comedy drama.
Set in the 1950s in a Australian countryside town, the film is based on the famous novel by Rosalie Ham. Kate Winslet appears in the titular role as Tilly Dunnage who returns to her hometown as a glamorous seamstress with an agenda of extracting sweet revenge on the townsfolk after being sent away as a child accused of involvement in a child’s death.
The film also explores the quirky relationship between Tilly and her slightly senile mother Molly (Judy Davis) as they try to re-familiarize with mother and daughter ways after years of separation. Liam Hemsworth is quite fetching as footballer Teddy McSwiney who tries to woo Tilly and it is indeed refreshing to see him paired against Winslet. As the film progresses we see the protagonist getting closer to uncovering what really had been behind the events of her childhood.
The Dressmaker has its fair share of laughs as well as emotional build ups which really makes for an interesting watch while The Hunger Games: Mockinjay Part 2 is already being touted as the perfect finale for the gripping fantasy series. We’ll leave it up to you to choose which one you’ll be going for this week!
