Film This Weekend: Truth
Posted in: FILM THIS WEEKEND
An all-star cast in a throwback style musical comedy v/s a biography that takes a direct plunge into the world of broadcast journalism. Coen brothers’ “Hail, Caesar” opens alongside Cate Blanchett starrer “Truth”. Both films have stellar casts and solid performances to boast of, but which one makes the box office sway this weekend?
A fascinating take on present day journalism and its challenges – Truth, directed by James Vanderbilt and starring Kate Blanchet as the protagonist, is a drama/biography that makes its debut in the UK this weekend.
The film is based on American journalist Mary Mapes’ memoir Truth and Duty: The Press, the President and the Privilege of Power. Through a series of events leading to the Killian Documents controversy in the face of the 2004 presidential elections, the film presents a behind the scenes view into the world of broadcast journalism. Cate Blanchett steps into Mary Mapes shoes and Robert Redford stars as CBS News anchor Dan Rather, who both fall under scrutiny after a 60 minute segment of a controversial story.
The film has been well-crafted and has done moderately well around the world. It’s riveting, but falls short of inspiring.
