The Oscar nominations are out and the Golden Globes claimed, but what makes The Revenant one of the forerunners in the award circuit of the year? UK finds out this weekend!

Based on true events and presenting a forthright account of a fur-trading undertaking in the 1820s, The Revenant delves deep into the outcomes of human survival instincts and agony. When a frontiersman is abandoned by his own team after a near-fatal bear attack, survives all odds to seek revenge on those who betrayed him. Leonardo Di Caprio stars as Hugh Glass, the legendary bear tracker left for dead by his mates while Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter, and Tom Hardy form the rest of the team.

The Revenant is not so much about story telling as it is about bringing our raw emotions to screen and making the viewers feel the agony of the characters in situations they are least aware of. It is about the brilliant performances we witness. While the audience trusts Di Caprio to outdo himself each time, but this time the bars have been set way too high. His performance is hard hitting and packs in a raw energy. He embodies the pain and the survival instincts on screen for his viewers to experience. While the supporting cast have done their bit in preserving the movie’s depth with their strong performances.

With an equally brilliant cinematography the Director Alejandro González Iñárritu creates a perfect portrayal of harsh yet artistically beautiful conditions. The imagery on screen is brought to life with the cinematographer’s artistic touch and as we are confronted with unforgiving conditions of the cold through a blend of darker and stark white tones, we also can’t help admire its beauty. A big chunk of the whole experience is also accountable to Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto’s gloom filled and calamitous background score that creates most of the atmosphere.

Without a doubt, The Revenant makes for an once-in-a-lifetime movie experience – a dark, gripping and visceral account of human endurance and survival. It definitely strengthens Di Caprio’s foothold as an actor- but will it get him that coveted Oscar? Well, for now it does make him the strongest contender!
