Posted in: FILM THIS WEEKEND
We have a biography with a math premise facing off against a twisted fairytale franchise at the box office this weekend. Which one are you rooting for?
Dev Patel starrer “The Man Who Knew Infinity” is a biography based on the life of genius mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan, who battles all odds to make his journey from the slums of India to Trinity College, Cambridge University, during the WWI, propelled by his love for math. The film traces the achievements of his life as he triumphs over the stringent education standards and everyday racism. He finds an unlikely confidante in G.H. Hardy (Jeremy Irons) who mentors and inspires him in his revolutionizing ideas.
Director Matt Brown takes a real life story of unlikely friendships and adds it up with the math background to make something real and endearing. Dev Patel’s brilliant portrayal of Ramanujan is the highlight of the film, while Jeremy Irons provides his support flawlessly. The film also stars Toby Jones, Stephen Fry and Devika Bhise.
For an effort at a biography “The Man Who Knew Infinity” is buoyed by its good intensions to tell an untold story as it is and is quite the easy watch.
