It’s Christmas Week and what better way to spend some good family time than a trip to the cinemas? Two big releases this weekend – the Chris Hemsworth starrer “In the Heart of The Sea” and a Mark Whalberg - Will Ferrell laughathon, “Daddy’s Home”. And, both are fine examples of a holiday movie, just in different ways.

The movie takes us as far back as 1820, and plunges us right aboard the whaling ship whose deadly encounter with a giant whale actually inspired the writing of Moby Dick. In The Heart of The Sea is precisely based on that true incident, only it provides us an elaborate account of the aftermath of the disastrous maritime experience. As the crew is left adrift to deal with the aftermath, they are faced with difficulties including starvation, sea storms and clash of egos as first mate Owen Chase (Chris Hemsworth) is still bent on bringing the giant whale down.  The cast includes other notable names like Benjamin Walker and Cillian Murphy.

Directed by Ron Howard who has previously made gems like “A Beautiful Mind”, In The Heart of The Sea is indeed an intriguing watch even though it has failed to impress the critics to a great extent. The CGI shines and brings to life the horrors of the fiasco. Only a tighter script could have worked wonders for the movie.
