After years of wait and an epic promotional build up later, it’s finally here! Star Wars: The Force Awakens opened in theatres this week, and has already earned $100 million in ticket pre-orders. So does it live up to the hype of the historical franchise – every bit of it!

Directed by JJ Abrams, Episode VII of the Star Wars Saga picks up from where The Return of The Jedi left off, some 30 years ago. And it does a great job of instilling everything good back into the offering of what made Star Wars such a success in the first place – Harrison Ford and the humor. It restores the vibe of the original franchise and rectifies a lot of what weighed down the prequel trilogy by the franchise from The Phantom Menace onwards.

The storyline sets off a new trilogy with Luke Skywalker’s trying to restore the Jedi Order as Princess Leia and Hans Solo fight against a new threat and the First Order in their attempts to rule the Galaxy. The film expertly blends new plotlines with the old streams and along with familiar characters like Hans Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), and Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill)  – we are also introduced to fresh faces and new characters like Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega). Lupita Nyong’o’s portrayal of space pirate Maz Kanata is refreshing while we are introduced to the new bot in the film – the BB-8 droid – which serves  the quick reminder of the R2-D2 but grabs attention with its technological bent and even though borderline annoying, it does grow on a classic fan.

Yet another strong point of the film seems to lie in creating perfectly terrifying antagonists and whether it is General Hux (Domhnall Gleeson) or Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis), they add excitement and a nail biting edge to the movie. Adam Driver impresses as the red lightsaber wielding Dark Side cyborg- Kylo Ren. The film is fast paced and as action packed as you can want it to be, full of edge of the seat moments but also instills a human element and a past

The Force Awakens is also the first Star Wars offering under the umbrella of Disney after it shelled out $4 billion to acquire Lucasfilms and the franchise. Needless, to say expectation have been extremely high around the film, and it is JJ Abrams’s vision that seems to have paid off. The director has been successful in re-creating George Lucas’s touch in this film and classic Star Wars pop culture fans and enthusiasts are sure to be satisfied to a great extent with it.

So gear up for a perfect “Star Wars” experience this weekend - full of lighsabers and inter-galactic action-  and don’t forget to buy your tickets in advance!
