Melson Gibson is back with an epic after rewarding us with films like Patriot and Braveheart nearly after a decade! But, this time it’s a real life war drama that is sure you give you a jolt! Andrew Garfield starrer Hacksaw Ridge opens in the UK this weekend, and here’s everything you need to know before experiencing the film first hand.

What is it about - The film is based on the real life story of WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, recipient of the Medal of Honor - who served in Okinawa. It’s a gripping war drama with intense moments, directed by Mel Gibson.

What makes the story special -  War dramas may come and go, but what makes Hacksaw Ridge special is that it is an account of an inspirational being.

It portrays the most gruesome war mankind has ever witnessed from the perspective of Doss, who surprisingly became the only person in history to have been bestowed the Medal of Honor without firing a shot. Serving as a medic in the army and being a Seventh-day Adventist, Doss managed to save 75 odd lives on the battlefield without ever taking up arms. The film successfully brings out the destruction of war and the power of faith in one inspirational motion picture.

Why it’s not for the weak-hearted - Mel Gibson is surely known for his elaborate battlefield scenes from his previous films, and Hacksaw Ridge is no different. Here, Gibson paints a very realistic picture of war through vivid imagery and unhindered scenes of the horrors of war. So, if you are planning to watch the film make sure you are well-prepared for it.

The cast - Andrew Garfield plays Doss in the film and is backed by a talented cast of actors including Australian actor Luke Bracey as Smitty Ryker and Vince Vaughn who plays Drill Sergeant Howell of Company B.

The Awards Scenario - A brilliant film as it is Hacksaw Ridge is being rightly recognized at this year’s Oscars and has won 6 nominations including for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. Andrew Garfield’s performance as the Pacifist medic has won him a lot of appreciation and his Oscar future with this film looks quite bright.

Is the intense war drama on your watch list this weekend?
