Anyone who has travelled in the last few years has probably taken advantage of some of the most incredible modern technology that they may very well have taken for granted. It wasn’t so long ago that travelling far from home would mean taking a paper travel guide book and map, a Walkman or portable radio, an alarm clock and a bulky camera in your luggage. If you wanted to get in touch with the folks back home then it was a question of trying to find a phone booth or – gasp! – sending a postcard.

The Expatriates is the second book from Janice Y K Lee. Since her first novel was the wonderful New York Times best-seller The Piano Teacher it is no wonder that her follow-up has been eagerly awaited.

Her new book follows the complicated lives of three American expats who are now living in Hong Kong. This is where Lee herself was born, although she now lives in the US.

What Belongs to You is the sparkling debut novel by Garth Greenwell. It is a claustrophobic book about a gay American writer who moves to Bulgaria to teach English and write poetry.

Forced into the Sofia underworld to look for partners, the un-named lonely narrator becomes obsessed with street-wise rent boy Mitko, whom he meets for the first time in a public bathroom. It is a bleak story that explores the empty and ultimately doomed relationship between these two protagonists.

Do you still read a printed newspaper every day? There is a good chance that you don’t. This once widespread habit has become far less common in recent years, as people find new ways to read the news and stay informed.

However, Apple CEO Tim Cook recently said that they expect iPhone sales to drop year on year for the first time ever in this current quarter. This downturn will occur if, as expected, they fail to sell more than 61.2 million iPhones during the three month period.
